.J. Timothy Richard, known as Tim, hails from the picturesque town of Lebanon, Oregon, located in the Mid-Willamette Valley along the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Raised by a schoolteacher mother and a millworker father, he was brought up in a family deeply committed to community involvement. Both of his parents actively participated in the community, his mother serving as an Episcopal Deacon and his father serving as a Lebanon City Councilman and library board member. Their values instilled a strong sense of community and a drive to be engaged in one’s passions.

Tim’s love for art and science ignited at an early age, deciding to be an Architect at age 8. Finally, in the tenth grade, he took his first drafting class with the newly arrived young drafting instructor, John Hughes. John became a mentor, business partner, and best friend in the following years. With John’s leadership and inspiration, Tim developed his drafting and design skills, leading to the development of his portfolio and acceptance to the University of Oregon School of Architecture upon high school graduation.

During High school, Tim participated in the local 7-Oak Outdoor School program, first serving as a cabin counselor, and later becoming an instructor and co-director. This experience instilled a deep commitment to environmental education and stewardship. This exposure led Tim to be an early adopter of environmentally sensitive ‘Green’ design and his involvement in the sustainable design movement and community.

Before heading to Architectural School, Tim and John Hughes co-founded Lofty Designs Partnership, providing design and drafting services to local contractors and clients. Building a design studio in John’s garage, they continued providing design services until Tim received his architectural license in 1994.

In 1986, Tim moved to Portland, Oregon, joining Jones & Jones, Architects and Landscape Architects. This opportunity connected Tim with the greater landscape design community which would prove to be a valuable association in later years and lead to a variety of opportunities including a position as a Principal Regional Planner for Metro Regional Government’s Natural Areas Program. Tim has worked with renowned architectural firms such as Meyer Reed, John Kyle Architect, Walker Macy, SRG Partnership, SERA, and Jim Cutler of Cutler Anderson Architects.

"My commitment is to create harmony between what is human-made and the natural environment"

Significant Projects include Washington Park Zoo (Oregon Zoo) African Bush Exhibit, Tualatin Hills Nature Park Visitor Center, Oregon Coast Aquarium Passages of the Deep Exhibit, Seymour Discovery Center, Edith Green Wendell Wyatt Federal Office Building, and the Pine Street Market.

In 2018, Tim formed J Timothy Richard Architect (JTR Architect) to provide architectural planning and design services, utilizing design skills acquired during his 40+ years of practice and the mentorship of John Hughes, David Walters, John Paul Jones, John Kyle, Doug Macy, Micheal Zilis, John Schleuning, Don Eggleston, Jim Cutler, and many other talented architects and designers along the way. Tim remains a draftsman at heart, initiating projects with pencil and paper, working through multiple plans and associated details, and creating 3-D museum board study and presentation models to help visualize the design. Sustainable and environmentally sensitive design is interwoven with the design process.

Outside of Tim’s architectural pursuits, he is an avid cyclist. Tim started bike touring with friends in high school leading to yearly journeys along the Pacific Coast, from the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, through Washington and Oregon, to Southern California. Additional tours include Glacier National Park, Acadia National Park to Boston, Pennsylvania to New York City, and a spin through Nova Scotia. Tim also participated in multiple charity rides in Hawaii, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, and New York.

Tim serves on the Frank Lloyd Wright Gordon House Conservancy Board and leads the Preservation and Grounds Committee overseeing preservation and maintenance projects to the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed and constructed building in Oregon. Tim resides in a historic bungalow in Portland’s Alberta Art’s District with his two Brittany pups Dottie and Rusty, and his three cats Cora, Walter, and Smoky.
