Oaks Park Improvement Project
Nestled in a historic site along the scenic Willamette River, Oaks Park stands as a testament to the preservation and perpetuation of an iconic amusement park. As a non-profit establishment, Oaks Park is dedicated to providing an affordable, safe, and family-friendly recreational experience for the community, notably referred to as Portland’s Playground. Collaborating with Walker Macy, JTR Architect has been instrumental in orchestrating transformative updates to this cherished landmark.
The initial phase of the project will include the replacement of the existing administrative office, which is currently located at the main park entry. Relocating the office to the southern end of the property will allow redevelopment of the park entry. A second phase of development will include a new gateway and entry plaza including a new gift shop, ticket booth, and renovated historic pavilions.
The new office building will replace the outdated facilities and provide a professional setting for the full-time management staff and board of directors. The new office site, located above the 100-year floodplain, will provide separation from the main park activities, and take advantage of the natural park setting with views overlooking the park and Willamette River beyond. The building form takes its clues from the existing contours of the site incorporating a central entry flanked by an office wing and a support services wing set at 75 degrees, forming a delta-shaped massing. Large windows will provide daylighting and connections to the surrounding natural landscape. Energy-efficient mechanical systems and lighting will be incorporated in the design.
A new picnic area plaza will be developed along the southern waterfront to make room for the expansion and improvement of the entertainment zone. A historic picnic shelter will be relocated to the plaza. Additional space for seasonal event tents and food trucks will be provided.
Opening its gates in May 1905, Oaks Park is not only one of the oldest continually operating amusement parks in the country but also a cherished piece of Portland's history. Participating in the evolution of Oaks Park is not just a professional achievement but a contribution to Portland's rich heritage—a tangible mark left behind in the city's ongoing narrative.
